EEWC Indiana Summer 2006 Meeting

The Good, the Bad, and the Downright Ugly:
Distinguishing Healthy from Unhealthy Religious Systems

Elizabeth Bowman, MD will be presenting the program.

Ms. Bowman will discuss concepts of group boundaries, approaches to individuality and growth and the theological / philosophical approach of healthy and unhealthy religious systems.

As a group we will also consider the psychodynamics of "offensive spirituality and spiritual defenses" in analyzing the health of religious systems.

The philosophy of this program combines group and individual psycho-dynamic theory with the theology of Paul Tillich, Rosemary Radford Ruether and Sallie McFague, with emphasis on patriarchy as a form of :idolatry of male.

Ways that healthy and unhealthy religious systems affect women will be examined.

The program will encourage discussion of personal observation and experiences of healthy and unhealthy religion. Together, we will work toward constructing a model of religion that is healthy for women and discuss ways to implement portions of this model in currently existing religious systems. Presenter:

Elizabeth Bowman, MD

Psychiatrist Elizabeth S. Bowman, is an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Neurology at Indiana University School of Medicine. She holds a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Christian Theological Seminary.
